About the role

Macadam Europe is a car inspection company. One of our business lines is the inspection of new vehicles that enter the port in England, the Netherlands and Belgium.

We are looking for a .NET developer to keep the new vehicle platform EVA and its companion EvaPDA Android application reliable for day-to-day operations. You will support mature production systems used by field staff, investigate incidents and deliver carefully controlled corrective changes that protect service continuity.

This is an operational maintenance role focused on stability, availability and safe releases. The role requires independent analysis, development and testing, including some possible small enhancements to the system. Big enhancements, new features, modernization, redesigns and migrations are assessed and escalated separately and are outside the scope of this role. Support is provided in line with agreed service arrangements.

Next to your role on the EVA platform, you may receive other operational tasks related to applications built by Macadam.

This is a freelance position for a long term project.

Technical environment

EVA uses VB.NET as its primary server-side language, alongside C#, on .NET Framework 4.8. It runs on Windows Server in Microsoft Azure and uses Microsoft SQL Server.

EvaPDA is a C# and Xamarin.Forms application with XAML interfaces, local SQLite storage and server API integration on Android handheld devices. Xamarin.Forms is no longer vendor-supported, and unsupported-platform risks must be escalated. This role focuses on maintaining the existing applications; migration is outside its scope.

Key responsibilities

  • Monitor availability, triage service interruptions and investigate root causes using logs, stack traces and operational evidence.

  • Diagnose and fix server and mobile defects with the smallest safe corrective changes, validating behaviour and regression risks before release.

  • Apply necessary security and dependency patches where available; assess compatibility, document residual risks and escalate unsupported-platform concerns.

  • Operate existing build and release processes, including Android signing and distribution, with change control, deployment checks and rollback plans.

  • Maintain the Azure Windows environment, including IIS, Windows services, logs and backups; support recovery and restore activities.

  • Investigate SQL Server issues, write and tune queries, and apply controlled schema changes and database restores when required.

  • Communicate incident status, service impact and risks clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, coordinating resolution and escalation.

  • Keep runbooks, deployment notes and incident records current, and share knowledge to support reliable handovers and continuity.

What you bring

Essential experience

  • At least five years of professional .NET experience supporting and maintaining production applications, with hands-on VB.NET experience essential and strong C# skills.

  • Strong .NET Framework 4.8 knowledge and practical experience troubleshooting legacy builds, configuration issues and runtime behaviour.

  • Hands-on Xamarin.Forms and XAML experience, including Android debugging, application signing and deployment to handheld devices.

  • Practical Azure and Windows Server operations experience covering IIS, Windows services, certificates, logs and backup or recovery procedures.

  • SQL Server experience writing and tuning queries, investigating data issues and managing controlled schema migrations.

  • Confident use of Visual Studio, MSBuild, NuGet and Git, with disciplined release practices using Azure DevOps and evidence-led troubleshooting from logs and stack traces.

Desirable experience

  • ASP.NET Web API, structured logging, authentication and integration troubleshooting.

  • Experience maintaining mature, business-critical applications, combining sound impact analysis, targeted testing and automation to deliver safe, high-confidence changes.

  • SQLite and Android device integration, including barcode scanning and camera functionality.

How you work

You stay calm when production issues arise, take pragmatic ownership and favour small, well-understood changes over unnecessary redesign.

You are in direct and constant contact with the business. Clear communication with operational and non-technical colleagues is essential. You collaborate openly, document what you learn and share knowledge to enable reliable handovers and continuity.

You speak Dutch and English fluently. You are willing to work at the Vilvoorde offices for at least 2/3 days per week. You can work independently and in group.
